Introduction Definition of wall Types of walls Conclusion

Solid structure that defines and sometimes protects an area Most commonly, a wall delineates a building and supports its structure, separates spaces in buildings into rooms, or protects or delineates a space.

The two types of walls are: Load-bearing wall Non-bearing wall

Load-bearing wall Bears a load resting upon it by conducting its weight to a foundation structure The materials most often used to construct load-bearing walls are concrete, block, or brick Loads accumulate towards the base Walls must resist along the whole length or at particular points where the force is concentrated

Doors and windows weaken the resistance of the wall and divert the forces about them The number of openings that can be used depends on the strength of the masonry and the stresses in the wall The placement of walls is determined by the type of support for floors and roofs

Non-bearing wall. A nonbearing wall is a wall construction that only has the purpose of supporting the weight of itself. Typically, a nonbearing wall would be a wall that is an interior wall that is constructed for the reason of separation of area. Excluding the independent garden variety, the non-bearing wall appears only where loads are carried by other members, as in heavy timber and other skeletal structures. Since the wall rests or hangs upon members of the frame, it becomes a curtain screen; and admits treatment in any durable, weather-resisting material. Traditional materials are often used, but light walls of glass, plastic, metal alloys, wood products, etc., can be equally efficient. This freedom of choice extends also the form of walls and offers greatly expanded opportunities for creative expression.

They diverge in the purpose that relates to the structure of the building, but together are the reason of the resistance and durability of our buildings
