Energy systems Muscles need energy to work This energy is supplied by food and stored in the body, eg as glucose or adenosine triphosphate (ATP) There are three energy systems: –Creatine phosphate system (immediate energy) — provides energy quickly but does not last long –Lactic acid system (short-term energy) — provides energy quickly but lactic acid soon builds up and causes fatigue –Aerobic system (long-term energy) — provides energy for long periods but needs oxygen to work

Creatine phosphate system This is an anaerobic system — it does not use oxygen There are small amounts of high energy (ATP) stores in the muscles — these can be used instantly but they will not last long ATP energy stores allow 5-8 seconds of hard work We then use our creatine phosphate stores to create more ATP (ATP-CP) This gives about another 20 seconds of hard work The creatine phosphate system is used for bursts of explosive speed, eg running the 100m
