Fast-Answers.Com Limited Junction Capacity Software to Facilitate Efficient Design
2
Introduction “Necessity is the mother of invention” and this proved to be the driving force in the development of
3
Background Initially developed by John Codd, a traffic engineering consultant with some 40 years professional experience encompassing work undertaken in five continents and throughout the transport sector. He is highly experienced in the development of transport plans to support master planning and urban design objectives. John identified the need for such software when working under pressure in the Middle East and is now committed to a continuous improvement programme working in conjunction with Edinburgh Napier University. The following information provides a brief overview of the history, development and potential of the software.
4
The Professional’s Dilemma Substantial workload Limited time and budget Multiple options to test Need robust results quickly Usual problems :
5
The Original Concept project proposed to double city centre size – but little scope for additional transport infrastructure lots of planners and designers needing immediate answers to speculative development options risk that any one of the options becomes reality. Need for a new approach identified when working under pressure on a master planning project in the Middle East:
6
The Perfect Solution Question: In an ideal world what would I like? Answer: Junction design program to provide fast and reliable answers to help with rapid design and option evaluation.
7
The Spec Fast turn around Easy to use Saves lots of time Based on tried and tested TRL research and established UK practice Requirements:
8
Existing Design Problems Available software is intended for detailed junction design Operation is relatively complex and needs high degree of proficiency and experience Nothing on the market to fix our problem
9
Fast-Answers Solutions Emphasis on concept and outline design Immediate answers Simple and easy to operate Requiring less proficiency and design experience
10
Theory into Practice Comparison of Fast-Answers method with conventional analysis on a real Transport Assessment Testing Fast-Answers method in anger at an Out of Town Shopping Centre in Scotland – technology used to make planning decisions and defend against attack Prototypes applied to junction design for new link road in Mumbai First launch Windows application tested in UK, Asia and Australasia Fine tuning and development of enhanced signals optimiser together with Edinburgh Napier University Early project development:
