Explain one study related to localization of function in the brain.l Liz Hofman and Grant Scott

Paul Broca (1861)  Found that people suffering from damage in the left frontal lobe of the brain were unable to understand and make grammatically correct sentences.”  His patients had problems producing speech but were able to understand it.”

Cont.  Most famous patient was a young man names Tan. He acquired this name because this was the only word he could say.”  When he died they found the source of his brain damage and led to the idea that the disability was the result of a specific brain trauma.”

Carl Wernicke (1874)  Described the area that appears to be crucial for language comprehension– the left posterior superior temporal gyrus.”  His patients could speak but they could not understand it.”

 From post-mortem studies of people who had strokes these two men came to the conclusion that language processing is localized. When this happens, it is possible to trace the origin of the behaviour to a specific part of the brain. Sooo….

Cont.  Auditory and speech info. is transported from the auditory area (temporal lobe) to Wernicke’s area for evaluation of significance of context of words, and then to Broca’s area for analysis of syntax.”  In speech production, context words are selected by neural systems in Wernicke’s area; grammatical refinements are added by neural systems in Broca’s area; then the info. is sent to the motor cortex, which sets up the motor movements for speaking.

Findings..!  Studies of localization led to the desire to map out the brain’s functions. The mapping of the brain was an important step forward n brain research.”
