Research objectives in the context of the CGIAR System priorities The CP will address System Priority 3A: Increasing income from fruit and vegetables. It is designed to achieve the general goal ---“Improve the income of smallholder producers and consumers through research relevant to major high-value fruits and vegetables”

Specific goal 1 – Identify key species for research and assess their factor and product markets Specific goal 2 – Enhance production of selected fruit and vegetables through improvement of farming systems Specific goal 3 – Pro-poor interventions that will enable farmers to benefit from fruit and vegetables are identified and implemented.

Specific goal 1 – Identify key species for research and assess their factor and product markets Identification of market opportunities for the poor Conduct of research on product choices and market behavior Identification of technology and variety change to help farmers participate in markets and related capacity development Identification of policy support needs

Specific goal 2 – Enhance production of selected fruit and vegetables through improvement of farming systems Identification of pro-poor opportunities to exploit specific markets Identification of pest and disease resistance needs Develop markers for specific traits (also see 2D) Design improve production technologies including IPM and WUE

Priority 2D Genetic enhancement of selected species to increase income generation of the poor SG1 Increasing the yield and stability of high value plant species and products through genetic enhancement

Priority 5B Making International and Domestic Markets Work for the Poor SG1 Enhance livelihoods and competitiveness of smallholder producers and food safety for consumers SG2 Improve the marketing environment for small holders by improving the efficiency of domestic markets
