2 Mission The stated mission of the Department of Education is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence. This consists of four major activities. -Establish policies related to federal education funding, administer distribution of funds and monitors their use. -Collect data and oversee research on America's schools. -Identify major issues in education and focus national attention on them. -Enforces federal laws prohibiting discrimination in programs that receive federal funds.

3 What They Handle The U.S. Department of Education: Raise national awareness of educational challenges throughout the country Reveal new and effective ways of teaching and learning Help communities solve difficult educational issues Publicly speaks to students about the importance of education ED's National Center for Education Statistics is the main federal organization responsible for collecting and analyzing data related to education. The NCES FastFacts page provides quick statistical answers to basic questions about education. The Nation's Report Card presents the results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, which measures student achievement in the U.S. Provide teaching resources for free. Offer help for teachers and students alike whom feel mistreated. Provides a site that offers information on: Early Childhood Education English Language Learner Math and Science Psychology of Learning

4 News Release The latest news release from the Department of Education (October 14, 2010) is focused on the Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and several other major educational representatives meeting to discuss the future of learning in schools. 5 Sub Organizations Office of Secretary: This consists of fourteen sub-devisions mainly including budget, office affairs, and educational outreach. Office of the Deputy Secretary: This office consists of five sub-devisions roughly directed towards the teaching of the english language, rehabilitation, mental and physical health, and the banning on drugs. Office of the Under Secretary: These offices posess three sub-offices cenetered around student aid, adult education, and postsecondary education.

8 Secretary Biography Arne Duncan is the secretary of the U.S. department of Education. He was born on November 6, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. Duncan graduated from Harvard with a degree in sociology in 1987. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 20, 2009 (Inauguration Day) after being president elected by Barack Obama. Before being appointed the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan served as the chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools, a position he held from June 2001 through December 2008. He became the "longest-serving big city education superentindent in the country" through this job. Duncan has served several organizations including The Golden Apple Foundation, The Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, Scholarship Chicago and several others. He has also received awards including the Niagra Foundation's Education Award, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Enterprising Educator Award, the University High School Distinguished Alumni award, and many others from different sources.
