Module 2 – Lesson 1 Lesson Topic: Interpreting Division of a Whole Number by a Fraction Lesson Objective: I can… Use visual models such as fraction bars, number lines, ad area models to show the quotient of whole numbers and fractions. I can also use models to show the connection between those models and the multiplication of fractions. Understand the difference between a whole number being divided by a fraction and fraction being divided by a whole number.
2
Opening Exercise: Write a fraction card. With your fraction do the following: 1. Draw a model of the fraction. 2. Describe what the fraction means.
3
Things to remember about fractions: 1. Fractions show the division of the numerator by the denominator. In other words, it shows a part being divided by a whole. 2. Fractions are numbers; therefore, they can be added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided.
4
Example 1: Maria has ¾ lb. of trail mix. She needs to share it equally among 6 friends. How much will each friend be given? What is this question asking us to do?
5
Example 1 continued: How can this question be modeled?
6
Example 2: Let’s look at a slightly different example. Imagine that you have 2/5 of cup of frosting that you need to share equally between three desserts. How would we write this as a division question?
7
For each of the questions below, rewrite the problem as a multiplication question, then model your answer. Independent Exercises: 1. ½ divided by 6 2. 1/3 divided by 3 3. 1/5 divided by 4 4. 3/5 divided by 4 5. 2/3 divided by 4
8
Closing: When a fraction is divided by a whole number, how does the answer compare with the dividend (the original fraction)?
9
Evaluate your learning: 1 2 3 4 How will you “Sharpen your Saw?”
