Mathematics 2 Ms. Meek Using the Right Measurement Tool Measuring with the right Units
2
There are many different units of measurement used to determine the quantity or amount of something. Each unit equals a specified amount. There are also a variety of tools that are used to measure these units. To correctly and more easily measure, it is important to use the right tools and measure with the most accurate units for each item measured. MeasurementUnits and Tools
3
Units of Measurement : Customary - inch, foot, yard Metric - meter, centimeter, millimeter If we are measuring something smaller than a foot, we should measure by inches or centimeters. (centimeters are smaller than inches) If the item was extremely small, we could use millimeters. Length
4
Units of Measurement : Customary - inch, foot, yard Metric - meter, centimeter, millimeter When measuring the length of something larger than a foot, or the size of a standard ruler, we should use a yard stick or a meter stick. A yard is just slightly smaller than a meter. Length
5
Yard stick = 1 yard, used for measuring items longer than one foot. Ruler = 12 inches or 1 foot Tape measurer and measurement wheel, used for longer distances Length
6
Units of Measurement : Customary –gallon, quart, pint, cup Metric - Liter, milliliter When measuring capacity using either system of measurement, we most often use a measuring cup. We fill it with the fluid we want to measure. Capacity
7
A gallon may require measurement in a larger container or several fills of a standard measuring cup. Most measuring cups have customary measurements on one side, and metric on the other. Capacity
8
A standard cup measures 2 – 4 cups, or 16 - 32 ounces of liquid on one side, and up to 1000 milliliters, or 1 liter on the other side. Capacity
9
Units of Measurement : Customary – pounds, ounces Standard – kilograms, grams Most items heavier than a paperclip, would be measured using kilograms or pounds. The weight of 1,000 paper clips is equal to 1 kilogram. That is still very light. A kilogram is heavier than a pound. Weight
10
Units of Measurement : Customary – pounds, ounces Metric – kilograms, grams A kilogram is just a little more than twice as much as a pound. A shoe weighs about 1 pound. Two of those same shoes would weigh about 1 kilogram. Weight
11
Units of Measurement : Customary – pounds, ounces Metric – kilograms, grams We measure weight using a tool called a scale. A scale may use customary units of measurement, metric units of measurement, or both units. Weight
12
Conclusion To correctly and more easily measure, it is important to use the right tools and measure with the most accurate units for each item measured. For small items less than 1 foot, measure with a ruler using inches or centimeters. For lengths longer than 1 foot, measure using a wheel, tape, or meter / yard stick. When measuring capacity, we most often use a measuring cup. When measuring weight, use a scale.
