Computer Applications I Competency 3 – Use handheld devices. Objective 3.03 – Use handheld devices and handheld applications software to input and edit complex documents.

Format Stripping When transferring a file from the computer to the PDA, some of the file’s format is stripped away. For example, tables, which are unsupported, are converted to tabbed columns. The tables will retain their original format in the Word document if no changes are made to them on the PDA. To exit the document on the PDA, all you need to do is tap OK. If a Word document is opened on the Pocket PC and saved in any format (Word, Pocket Word, Text, Rich) the unsupported formatting is completely lost. However, if it is viewed in Pocket Word but not edited, it will retain the original Word format. The toolbar contains shortcuts to the text formatting options available in Pocket Word. You can change the font type, font style, paragraph alignment, or create a bulleted list.

Data Stripping Pocket Excel supports most of the important features found in the desktop version of Excel, including all the financial, date and time, math and trigonometry, database, and statistical functions. It also supports multiple sheets in a workbook as well as functions like Sort and AutoFilter. Users will not be able to display vertical text, graphs, tables, backgrounds, or pivot points. Remember these limitations when designing Excel spreadsheets to use on the Pocket PC.

Wireless Connectivity Several PDA’s offer a wireless option! Networks that you have already configured are preferred networks and are listed under Wireless Networks. You can connect to only preferred networks or set your device to search for and connect to any available network, whether it is preferred or not. To configure a wireless network: Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab > Network Card > Wireless tab. To change network settings in Wireless networks: Tap a network. If you do not see a desired network, tap Add New Settings and follow the instructions on the screen. To access networks: Select All available, Only access points, or Only computer-to-computer depending on the type of networks you connect to. To connect only to networks you have already configured, clear the Automatically connect to non- preferred networks check box.
