2 Are Landfills Sustainable? Johnson County Landfill to close no later than 2027. Currently, no large landfills are planned to be built. Other landfill disposal options are much farther away. Buried resources

3 Sanitary Landfills in the Region (2005)

4 Plan Goals Expand residential recycling services. Increase commercial recycling by 35%. Eliminate disposal of yard waste in landfills. Implement Pay-As-You- Throw and unlimited “free” recycling. Lead by example

5 Johnson County Landfill Receives over 5,500 Tons per day

9 What are we Throwing Away? In 2006 and 2007, Johnson County and MARC sponsored a waste sort at Jo Co disposal facilities: Johnson County Landfill, Olathe’s Transfer Station, APAC-Reno C/D Landfill.

15 Bailed Recyclables Recycling conserves our natural resources Recycling saves energy Recycling keeps materials out of the landfill

16 Is composting Sustainable? Household yard waste can be managed by professionals at a composting facility. Grass clippings and leaves can be mulched back on the lawn with a mulching mower. Yard waste and food waste can be managed with a backyard compost pile and used the product on your gardens.

17 Our Waste in the near future County is looking to restrict yard waste from disposal in landfills. Mandatory that trash and recycling services are both offered in a base rate. Pay-As-You-Throw county-wide.
