The author of this book imagines what a Tudor person would make of life in modern-day Britain and goes on to summarise some of its key characteristics. You have 10 minutes to read the extract and then in teams try to summarise what would a Tudor person would typically see as he looked around England at the start of Henry VII’s reign. You may wish to use a pair of glasses as the template for your ideas. The team with the best ideas wins.

You are Henry VII. Make a list of the features of society at the start of your reign which make it easy for you to govern. In a different colour, make a list of things that are likely to provide challenges in the future. Write a paragraph in your notes summarising the key features of society at the start of Henry’s reign. Refer to the strengths and weaknesses and decide how stable society was.
