7. I. Independent Clause Independent clauses- have a subject and a verb and can stand by itself. These sentences can be short or long. What is important is that the clause can express a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.

8. Examples of independent clauses: They lived on an island. (They is the subject and lived on an island is the predicate.) Native Americans were self sufficient.

11. II. Dependent Clauses A dependent clause has a subject and a verb but cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence. Something to remember…ask yourself “Is this a complete thought, or do you need more information?” More info= subordinate clause

12. Examples of Dependent or Subordinate Clauses Ex: until they were attacked (This doesn’t tell me who was attacked or what they did until they were attacked. It leaves me needing more information.) How could I fix it? Ex: When the bicycle had a flat tire What more do I need here?
