The students then experimented with how the different lengths of string affected the number of swings, they collected data from the class and wrote a claim. 9/29 The students reflected on the pendulum experiment and wrote a claim with evidence that answered the Focus Question. They revisited the question on page 9 and made changes to their original answer based upon what they found out during the pendulum experiment. 9/30 The students created picture graphs based on the pendulum’s length and they wrote the definition of standard and a controlled experiment. 10/1 The students worked in groups to create two coordinate graphs. 10/2 The students compared the graphs from each table and discussed similarities, differences, and the changes that needed to be made to the graphs. Each student then created their own graph in their notebook. Science Weekly Review Science Next Week On Monday, the sixth grade will be visited by retired Corning Inc. scientist, Dr. Tong. Dr. Tong will be leading the class in a catapult experiment in which the students will use the scientific method. Focus Question for the week: How can you use graphs to predict results? 10/5 The students will get three different length pendulums. They will use their graphs to make predictions on how many swings the pendulums will make. Students will test their hypothesis. 10/6 The students will write a claim and give evidence based upon the Focus Question. 10/7 The students will design a controlled experiment that can test to see if a tire swing operates by the same rules as the smaller pendulum made of string. 10/8 Students will read and answer questions on the article “What Scientists Do.” Middle School Student Council News This year grades 6-8 have their own student council for Middle School and as a result will have a separate dance time and location. This year homecoming weekend is October 17th. The 6th grade has been asked to dress as clowns for the parade. Parade: October 17th, starts at 11 AM, line up starting 10:15- 10:30. The homecoming dance will be held in the gym from 7:30-9:30 and is semi-formal. Ms. Hall is the advisor for the Middle School student council and can be reached at, dhall@addiosoncsd.org. dhall@addiosoncsd.org Lunch Detention The 6 th grade team has started assigning lunch detention! Lunch detention will be given for any student who comes to class with homework assignments incomplete. Lunch detention will be held 7 th period during their IRT/Lunch where they will grab a lunch and go directly to lunch detention for the duration of period 7.

2 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students have continued to apply reasoning to solve ratio problems while they explore representations of collections of equivalent ratios and relate those representations to the ratio table (6.RP.3). Building on students experience with number lines, they have been representing collections of equivalent ratios with a double number line model as well as relating ratio tables to equations using the value of a ratio defined in Topic A. https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6-mathematics https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6-mathematics Volume 4 Issue 3 October 2 nd, 2015 Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math!  Monday 10.5 Lesson 15: A synthesis of Representations of Equivalent Ratio Collections  Tuesday 10.6 Module 1 Mid Module REVIEW  Wednesday 10.7 Module 1 Mid Module TEST  Thursday 10.8 Lesson 16: From Ratios to Rates  Friday 10.9 No School ELA with Mr. Knowles *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The first AR book and quiz is due on October 14, 2015. This past week students reviewed the Writing Traits for Voice. Voice is the writer coming through the words, the sense that a real person is speaking to us and cares about the message. It is the heart and soul of the writing, the magic, the wit, the feeling, the life and breath. When the writer is engaged personally with the topic, he/she imparts a personal tone and flavor to the piece that is unmistakably his/hers alone. And it is that individual something–different from the mark of all other writers–that we call Voice. ELA Next Week Next week students will finish reviewing the writing traits. We will also begin Module #1, Unit 1. You can find Module #1 here: https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-artshttps://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-6- english-language-arts Social Studies Next Week On Monday they will need to bring in a current news article (less than a week old) and write a short summary that gives the gist of the article. On Tuesday students will answer the compelling question and review for the short quiz on Thursday to wrap up the unit. Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week This week students began learning the concept of map scales. Scale is an essential geographic tool for creating and interpreting maps. There are 3 types of scales the students will learn about this year: global, regional, and local. The students are making a scale map of the classroom and need to determine the value of the graph blocks in relationship to the size of the floor tiles, this project is done using metric measurement.
