Explain at least 2 reasons why the United States wanted to remove American Indians from their lands. To end years of conflicts between the settlers and the American Indians Because they wanted the land for farming and settlement Because gold was found on the land

What was the issue of Nullification all about? South Carolina did not like the protective tariff (a tax on foreign goods) because they liked to trade with Great Britain. It made goods more expensive for them (hurt them) and helped the North (because the North is where a lot of stuff was manufactured). South Carolina believed that they had the right to nullify, or not follow, a federal law within the boundaries of their state.

Who supported Nullification? John C. Calhoun, the Vice-President The state of South Carolina supported Nullification.

How did Jackson respond to the idea of Nullification? Jackson threatened to send federal troops into South Carolina.

How was the Nullification Controversy resolved? The federal government agreed to lower the tariffs little by little and South Carolina agreed to make sure its people paid the tariffs.

What was the problem with Missouri becoming a state? Would lead to an “unbalance” in Congress between slave states and free states

Why did people disagree about Missouri becoming a states? Did not want to see slavery expand Would upset the balance between slave states and free states

How was this issue resolved? Add 1 slave state = Missouri Add 1 free state = Maine Any new state north of the 36 30 line would be a free state Henry Clay - Missouri Compromise
