 The pure heart is an important part of the Christian’s life.  The heart is the control center of our eternal spirit.  The seat of our intellect, emotions, attitudes, thoughts and will.

 It is imperative that we maintain a pure heart (Prov. 4:23, 3:5-6)  BUT, there are dangers to keeping the heart pure.  In this lesson we will discuss some of these dangers

WARNING! Psa. 66:18, “ If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.” Gen. 6:5, “ Then the L ORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

WARNING! Prov. 15:11, “ Hell and Destruction are before the L ORD ; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men.”

WARNING! Matt. 12:34-35, “Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” Mark 7:18-23

WARNING! Titus 1:15, “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.”

Lust The idea of lust is a strong desire to have that which belongs to another or that which you are not entitled to. LUST will very quickly taint the pure heart.

Lust Our society is driven by lust Sensuality is everywhere – television, movies, music, books, magazines, billboards. The greatest purveyors of lust are accessible from our homes! Such will rapidly taint our hearts

Lust Matt. 6:22-23, The lamp of the body is the eye… What we allow into our bodies through the eyes affects our heart. Rom. 1:24, “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,”

Lust We must learn to recognize lust and avoid it! Job 31:1 ““I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?” 1 Pet. 2:11, abstain from fleshly lusts 2 Tim. 2:22 – flee youthful lusts 1 John 2:15-16 – lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life Developing Self-Control will help you overcome lust!

Covetousness The lust for things! Also very prevalent in our society. We live in a materialistic world! The pursuit of things will CLUTTER and corrupt the heart Eccl. 7:7, “Surely oppression destroys a wise man’s reason, And a bribe debases the heart.”

Covetousness Luke 8:4-15, esp. 14. Things will corrupt the heart Luke 18:18-23, the rich young ruler! 2 Pet. 2:14, a heart trained in covetous practices Matt. 6:24 – you cannot serve 2 masters! Learning contentment will help you overcome covetousness!

Pride, Selfishness Pride – the lust for self- exaltation. One who see himself better than others and he shows it! Pride leads to selfishness - one who cares only about himself!

Pride, Selfishness This can also be a danger in the Lord’s church Selfish members won’t give Pride can cause the church to refuse to change Compromise often the product of pride.

Pride, Selfishness The self-serving attitude will NOT complement a pure heart. Prov. 16:5, “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the L ORD ; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” Vs.18, “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Pride, Selfishness 1 John 3:17, “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?”

Pride, Selfishness 1 Pet. 5:5, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Developing humility will help you overcome pride & selfishness!

Ignorance Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”

Ignorance Ignorance is a danger in society! It has many consequences. Ignorance will lead one away from God! We live in times of great spiritual ignorance.

Ignorance 1 Tim. 1:13, Acts 26:9, Paul an example of dangers of ignorance! Yet his work would be, “to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.” Acts 26:18

Ignorance Prov. 19:2, “Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, And he sins who hastens with his feet.” Eph. 4:18, having their understanding darkened,…because of the ignorance that is in them…

Ignorance Rom. 16:18, how false teachers work: “For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of

Ignorance James 1:26, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” Bible study will help overcome ignorance 2 Tim. 2:15

Unbelief Heb. 3:12, “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;” Far too many do not believe God! Mark. 16:14, Rev. 21:8

Unbelief Mark 16:14, “Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.”

Unbelief Rev. 21:8, “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” An uncompromising faith will overcome unbelief!

Bitterness Being resentful and ill-willed Such dispositions will seriously damage the heart. They hinder development and lead to decisions that poison the pure heart. Acts 8:23, Simon was told he was poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.

Bitterness James 3:14, “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.”

Bitterness Eph. 4:31, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.” Prov. 26:24-26

Bitterness 1 John 4:20, “If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” Hatred is often the product of bitterness Developing love will overcome bitterness!

Avoiding Impurities  1 Pet. 3:15 – Sanctify the Lord God in your heart…  BE alert to the devices of the devil 1 Pet. 5:8, 2 Cor. 2:11  Develop godly qualities (cf. 2 Pet. 1:5-11) More on this tomorrow night!
