John Sutter was having a sawmill built on the American river north of Sacramento California. James Marshall was hired to inspect the ditch his crew was digging. One day he saw a glimpse of something sparkling so he picked it up and it was gold. Sutter tried to keep it a secret but the word got out soon people from all over the world from Europe, China, Australia, and South America.
