Living Conditions Living conditions on the Mayflower were terrible: it was winter so there were storms, disease, hunger and death. The people were squashed and one of the passengers fell into the sea. The Pilgrims stayed on board the ship during the first winter. Only 53 passengers and half the crew survived this winter because there was snow and cold temperatures. The Pilgrims didn’t have time to plant food.
