SOLVE A VARIETY OF WORD PROBLEMS WITH PERIMETER. MODULE 7 LESSON 23

MULTIPLY BY 5 SPRINT 2 minutes End

PROBLEM SOLVING STEPS 1. Read & Model the problem Read the problem What can you draw? What conclusions can you make using the drawing? 2. Write & Solve an equation Use numbers to show your thinking and conclusions 3. Write a statement explaining your answer Use words to explain your answer and how it relates to the problem 4. Assess the reasonableness of your solution Ask yourself questions to make sure your answer makes sense: The question asks for … My answer matches the question because … The units I used make sense because … My answer is the right size (not too big or small) because …

PROBLEM 1 Gale makes a miniature stop sign, a regular octagon, with a perimeter of 48 centimeters for the town he built with blocks. What is the length of each side of the stop sign? P = 48 cm 48 ÷8 = 6 cm Each side of the stop sign is 6 cm long.

PROBLEM 3 Travis bends wire to make rectangles. Each rectangle measures 34 inches by 12 inches. What is the total length of wire Travis needs to make two rectangles? 34 in 12 in (2 x 12) + (2 x 34) = (24) + (68) = 92 inches

PROBLEM 2 Travis bends wire to make rectangles. Each rectangle measures 34 inches by 12 inches. What is the total length of wire Travis needs to make two rectangles? 34 in 12 in (2 x 12) + (2 x 34) = (24) + (68) = 92 inches 92 + 92 = 184 inches Travis needs 184 inches of wire to make two rectangles.

PROBLEM 3 The perimeter of a rectangular bedroom is 32 feet. The width of the room is 8 feet. White is the length of the room? ?? 8 ft 32 ÷ 2 = 16 ft The length of the bedroom is 8 feet. 8 + ____ = 16 ft

PROBLEM 4 Raj uses 6-inch square tiles to make a rectangle. What is the perimeter of the rectangle in inches? P = 16 tiles 16 x 6 = 96 inches The perimeter of the rectangle is 96 inches. 6 inches

PROBLEM 5 Mischa makes a 4 foot by 6 foot rectangular banner. She puts ribbon around the outside edges. The ribbon costs $2 per foot. What is the total cost of the ribbon? 4 ft 6 ft (2 x 4) + (2 x 6) 4 + 4 + 6 + 6 = 20 ft The cost of the ribbon is $40. 20 x $2 = $40

PROBLEM 6 Colton buys a roll of wire fencing that is 120 yards long. He uses it to fence in his 18 yard by 24 yard rectangular garden. Will Colton have enough wire fencing left over to fence in a 6 yard by 8 yard play space for his pet rabbit? Garden 18 yd 24 yd (2 x 18) + (2 x 24) = (36) + (48) = 84 yards Colton has 36 yards left. 120 – 84 = 36

Rabbit Pen 6 yd 8 yd (2 x 6) + (2 x 8) = (12) + (16) = 28 yards Colton has enough wire fence to make the rabbit pen because there are 36 yards left, and he only needs 28 yards. 28 < 36
