D EFINE P ROVINCIALISM : the way of life or mode of thought characteristic of the regions outside the capital city of a country, esp. when regarded as unsophisticated or narrow-minded Now take a few minutes to consider examples of “provincialism” in TKAM and write your responses on the handout. Include page numbers for your references. Consider the general attitude of Maycomb people towards some persons who they think are untrustworthy.

E XAMPLES : Aunt Alexandra She is overly proud of her family heritage and believes that her family is better than others in Maycomb County. She socializes only with the upper-class townspeople, and views others (such as the Cunninghams) with disdain. The town’s perception of Miss Maudie "Did you know some of them came out of the woods one day and told me that me and my flowers were gonna go to hell, they thought I spent too much time God's outdoors but not enough time in the house reading the Bible."

E XAMPLE : The town’s new view of Atticus Once see as the town’s pride but now has lost diginity because he is defending a black. "I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a nigger lover besides but it certainly does mortify the rest of the family"(ch. 9) says Francis to Scout on the night when they are celebrating Christmas.
