GEOGRAPHY 420 - Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing T/Th 1:00 - 2:50 Location: 5-215

ASSIGNED READING MATERIALS WILL COME FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES (ONLINE AND PAPER): Primary Text: Online fundamentals of Remote SensingOnline fundamentals of Remote Sensing Supplementary text: Remote Sensing Tutorial.Remote Sensing Tutorial. Lillesand, T.M. and R.W. Kiefer: 2000, Wiley. Remote Sensing and Image Interpretation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES & TOPICS: This course introduces the theories, methodologies & applications of Remote Sensing. Topics will include; 1. principles of electromagnetic radiation. 2. interactions of solar radiation with the Earth's atmosphere. 3. characteristics of sensor systems. 4. types of data 5. applications of R. S. to vegetation, soil and water. 6. basic skills development in ERDAS Imagine. A detailed schedule including topics, readings, and assignments will be posted online with the progress of the class (see calendar page).

ASSIGNMENTS/QUIZZES (25%): There will be a variety of exercises due weekly or every other week, these may include in and out of class exercises, written and computational exercises, and software and internet based exercises. Quizzes will be in class only. EXAMS (50%): Two exams will be given, midterm (25%), final (25% - cumulative).

Landsat Project (25%): The project will involve downloading Landsat data of the LA basin area and analyzing it using ERDAS Imagine software. ATTENDANCE: An attendance sheet may be passed around or a pop quiz given at some class meetings, each missed class will result in a 1% deduction in final grade.

GRADING: Assignments/Quizzes 25%, Exams 50%, Project 25%. All assignments must be handed in as hard copy in class on the due date (no emailed assignments). Only one late assignment will be accepted, for ½ credit. No late assignments will be accepted after an assignment is returned to the class. No makeup quizzes will be allowed.

7 elements of remote sensing process 1.Energy Source (A) 2.Radiation & Atmosphere (B) 3.Interaction with Targets (C) 4.Recording of Energy by Sensor (D) 5.Transmission & Reception (E) 6.Interpretation and Analysis (F) 7.Application (G)

Extract meaningful information from imagery 6. Interpretation and Analysis (F) - the processed image is interpreted, visually and/or digitally, to extract information about the target which was illuminated.
