Yurok Live in the NW (California) Redwood Forest Special strings of shells were used for money Bartered for animal skins, food, elk horns, and canoes Lived near rivers and fished for salmon, which is still important today Changed their environment by building dams

Cherokee Lived in the SE (Georgia) in the Appalachian Mtns. They lived hunted, fished, and farmed near rivers and streams Had summer and winter houses Sequoyah invented the Cherokee alphabet The rich soil (piedmont) was good for farming They traveled west on the “Trail of Tears”

Haudenosaunee Lived in the NE (New York) in the forests where they hunted and grew crops Haudenosaunee means “people of the longhouse” Six to ten families that lived in the longhouses were called a clan Peacemaker helped form a government that made laws Five Nations were formed by the government to keep order and peace The 5 Nations on the wampum belt were; Seneca, Oneida, Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga
