2.  Institution in which we make and enforce public policies.  Has 3 powers:  Legislative – make laws  Executive – enforce laws  Judicial – interpret laws

3.  State  Territory  Government  Sovereign  People  Example: Canada  Nation  Group of people  Common bond – race, language, religion  Example: Cherokee Nation

4.  Nation-state  The group of people that are united live in their own sovereign state.  Example: Japan  Stateless-nation  The group of people that are united do not have a country to call their own.  Example: Palestine

5.  Evolutionary:  Evolved from the heads of families ▪ Examples – elders, tribal chiefs, etc.  Force:  Leaders took control by force ▪ Examples – dictatorships, Cuba/Castro  Divine Right:  God/The Gods choose the leaders or they are descendants of the Gods. ▪ Examples – Monarchs (Pharoahs, Kings, Tsars, etc.)

6.  Social Contract:  Thomas Hobbes & John Locke  The people surrendered some of their own power/rights in exchange for the protection/laws of the government. ▪ Examples – democracies,United States
