1 Fibre optic technology- CG-S Network via Fibre Optic
3.2 Fibre optic technology- CG-S Network via Fibre Optic A.Klepper – 01/04/11 Rev.A

2 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Functionality of the fibre-optic cable: Electr./Opto converter + - Electr. signal Fibre-optic cable with distance up to 100km + - (one Fibre-optic cable for each direction !) Electr. signal

3 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Structure of the fibre-optic cable: Types of fibre glass: POF- fibre-optic cable Plastic Optical Fiber Used in: cars ambient lighting Structure: Core Jacket Primary coating Secondary coating Tertiary coating Colour coating HCS- fibre-optic cable Hard polymer Cladded Silica Used in: industry Standard fibre-optic cable Material: Quartz glass Used in: standard telecommunication cable

4 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Structure and Dimensions of the „core“: Outer diameter Core diameter Typical Core diameter / Outer diameter: Used e.g. for: 9/125 μm Singlemode (Qualityclass OS1) 50 / 125 μm Multimode – Europa (Qualityclass OM2) 62,5 / 125 μm Multimode – USA (Qualityclass OM1) 100 / 140 μm other

5 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Multimode / Singlemode transmission: Singlemode (used for telecommunication): Very high distances possible (5km up to 100km) lower bandwidth Singlemode Multimode Multimode : very high bandwidth (up to 10 Gigabit/sek.) lower distance (up to 2km...4km) Simplex / Duplex and wave length Simplex transmission (Half-Duplex) : One way communication (1 core) Duplex transmission: Two way communication (2 cores) 850 nm (near infrarot range) in Multimode 1310nm / 1550 nm in Singlemode Typical wave length:

6 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Fibre optic plug systems: 1. ST-Plug (Runde form with bayonet catch ) 2. MTRJ-Plug (AMP-plug) 4. LC-Plug (4-square form, extremly compact, Plug of the future 3. SC-Plug (4-square form with fast plug catch) 5. E2000-Patchcabel

7 Basic informtions about fibre optic technology
Fibre-optic cable versus copper cable Advantage : - Very high bandwidth - High distances possible (up to 100 km) - Very good transmission quality - Undisturbed against lightnings, high currents and voltage potential difference - No cross talk, like copper applications - Safety against explosion and fire (chemical industry) - Safety against weathering - Less weight Disadvantage : Extrem sensible against pressure and drawing power Expensive in comparision with standard copper cable (CAT 5) - High bending radius !, easy breaking !!
