Big picture Propaganda became a massive part of life in Nazi Germany In fact it almost became a parody of itself eg- people did not believe it

Creating a volksgemeinschaft Volksgemeinshaft- literally means people’s community (big society anyone) It not require a major change in social structure of Germany but required a change in the consciousness of the German people so that they all supported the new German state and acted together This was a new, unified community, based on sharing blood and race with a common view of the world or philosophy (Weltanschauung)

Education Used two main ways-education and youth groups. In 1933 all youth activities apart from the Church were taken over by Hitler, and membership was compulsory but could be avoided after leaving school at 14.

Actions 1937- 97% teachers had joined the National Socialist Teachers League and attended a course on Nazi ideology and physical education Curriculum was changed, including more physical exercise, and Nazi ideas incorporated into subjects especially biology Different sexes had different subjects eg girls did needlework Higher education changed in less ways, in fact less people went into higher education Lecturers were purged and students forced to join the Germans Students League

The Bizarre The Nazi’s created three Ordensburgen (Castles of Order) party modelled on medieval castles where they were trained as future political and military leaders They were held in vast castles with 1000 students and 500 staff “My Ordensburg will mould a youth from which the world will shrink in terror”

Social policy as propaganda Much propaganda was to change the consciousness of people rather than their social position Volksgemeinshaft was established through social programs like “Beauty of Work” and “Strength Through Joy” provided to German workers. Examples- peoples car scheme, Winter Relief, Eintopf scheme

How successful was Nazi Propaganda? This is assessed differently by different historians as success is based on peoples attitudes Some say propaganda helped the Nazi’s grow under the Weimar Republic or strengthening the regime Some historians argue that different strands of propaganda were successful in different ways
