Since the age of exploration, many immigrants have chosen Canada as their home. The decisions to leave one's country of origin and choose another are based on many different push and pull factors. More recently, immigrants have chosen Canada due to the many employment opportunities available to them here.

Assignment 1. Turn to page 168 and read about the connection between immigration and our workforce needs. Complete the second BTQ on page 168.

Skilled Workers There are six criteria factors that immigrants must meet in order to apply to come to Canada as a skilled worker. Each criteria is based on a point system. 1. Education: based on highest level of education (25 points) 2. French and English ability: based on how well a person can read, write, speak, and listen (24 points)

3. Work Experience: New immigrants MUST have at least one year full time work experience or the equivalent in part time work. (21 points) 4. Age (10 points)

5. Arranged Employment: This factor only applies if an immigrant has a permanent job offer in Canada and is likely to accept the job. The job offer also has to be in an occupation listed in the National Occupational Classification. (10 points) 6. Adaptability: This factor is based on combining the main applicant and spouse’s education and work in Canada and if they have family here. (10 points)

The maximum points to qualify is 100. The pass mark is 67. This does not guarantee the applicant can come to Canada. Canada Immigration makes the final decision. If a new immigrant is selected, the person must also pass medical and security checks. Let’s take a closer look at the factors. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assess/index.asp
