2 Everyone can learn Math to the Highest Levels!
There is no such thing as a math person! We need them to have a “growth mindset.” This means that they can learn anything and the more they work at it the better they will get! An important way to encourage a growth mindset is by praising what students have done and learned, not them as a person. So instead of saying “you are so smart,” say “it is great that you learned that.” Encourage students to believe in themselves! math-for-students/

3 Our synapses are firing away as we are learning new things!
Mistakes are Valuable Tell students that you love mistakes and that they will be valued at all times, tell them that it is good to make mistakes because when we make mistakes our brains are growing! Our synapses are firing away as we are learning new things! Paper activity

4 Questions are Really Important!
I love questions about math! Research shows us that question asking is linked to high achievement! Always ask if something makes sense! Smart poem-Shel Silverstein

5 Math is About Creativity and Making Sense!
The key to understanding math is making sense of it. Math is a creative subject and at its core, about visualizing patterns and creating solution paths that others can see, discuss and critique. Visualize math and talk about it! Does it make sense? Encourage visual mathematics!

6 Math is About Making Connections and Communicating!
Math is a connected subject and is a form of communicating! Encourage student to represent their math results in different forms: words, pictures, graphs and equations. *The part of the brain that talks about math is different than the side of the brain that visualizes math!

7 Depth is Much More Important Than Speed!
Many people incorrectly believe that being good at math means being fast at math. We no longer need students to compute fast (we have computers for that) we need them to think deeply, connect methods, reason and justify! Think slowly and deeply!

8 Math is About Learning and NOT Performing!
Math is a growth subject ! It takes time to learn and is all about effort! Many students think that their role in math class is not to learn but to get questions right-to perform. Math is about learning, and to know that math is a growth subject.
