2 Dysthymic Disorder  Chronic, low-grade feelings of depression  cause discomfort  do not impair the ability to function  “The Blues” – persists indefinitely rather than get better  Usually in response to some stressful event or trauma

3 Bipolar Disorder  Periods of incapacitating depression alternating with periods of extreme euphoria and excitement  Mania – suddenly and rapidly  sleep little but lots of energy  delusional about wealth, power, fame  Usually in early 20s  Episodes – few days to couple of months  2 million Americans, men and women
