Dysthymic Disorder Chronic, low-grade feelings of depression cause discomfort do not impair the ability to function “The Blues” – persists indefinitely rather than get better Usually in response to some stressful event or trauma

Bipolar Disorder Periods of incapacitating depression alternating with periods of extreme euphoria and excitement Mania – suddenly and rapidly sleep little but lots of energy delusional about wealth, power, fame Usually in early 20s Episodes – few days to couple of months 2 million Americans, men and women
