Location Place Movement Region Human-Environmental Interaction Notes:
7
WB: Pretend your family is moving to a new city. Which of the five themes would be most important and beneficial to research before moving there? Justify your reasoning.
8
Evaluate a city of your choice using the five themes. Locations: Where is it located? Place: Describe its physical and human characteristics. Movement: How are goods, people and ideas transported? Region: How is it alike or different from places around it? HEI: How do people who live there interact (use, change and adapt to) with the environment?
10
Homework: Create symbol for each of the five themes of geography and below each symbol explain your rationale.
11
Topic: Theme of Location Session: 8 Date 9/17 Warm-UP: Examine the photo and captions below. Which of the five themes of geography are indicated in each caption? * COPY THE STATEMENTS THIS TIME! * Justify your reasoning. 1. High-rise buildings maximize the use of valuable land. 2. Chicago is located in the upper Midwest of the United States. 3. Chicago is a major hub for great lakes water transportation and a main railroad headquarters.
12
Vocab: Di fferentiate between absolute location and relative location. Absolute location: where a place is using longitude and latitude. Absolutely positively where a place is! Relative location: where a place is in relationship to another place Cardinal directions (North, South, East, West)
13
Objective: In our study of geography, SWBAT acquire strategies for reading and interpreting informational text (maps) to gather information and make comparisons by utilizing the theme of location to answer geographical questions. (NCSCOS 6G)
14
Reviewing and applying the Five Themes of Geography Examine your statement about France. Determine which of the five themes it represents and go stand by that theme. Discuss with your group why you all chose that theme.
15
Vocab: Define and create a symbol for each of the following terms. Using page A2 in the textbook. Latitude Longitude Latitude & Longitude Shuffle
16
Vocab: Define and create a symbol for "hemisphere" using page A2 in your textbook.
17
Where is Brazil located? Provide its relative location. Turn to pg. A1 in your textbook WB: In which hemispheres is Brazil located? Justify your reasoning.
18
Open your textbook to page A16-A17 and find the following: Tropic of Capricorn Tropic of Cancer Equator Prime Meridian Arctic Circle Antarctic Circle 66.5 S 66.5 N 22.5 N22.5S
19
Rio de Janeiro Using your atlas and the maps in your textbook, find the following locations.
20
City, CountryDescribe the country's relative location to another country. Find the city's absolute location using latitude and longitude. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Brazil is south of Venezuela & east of Peru & Bolivia. 23 S, 43 W Athens, Greece Greece is west of Turkey and south of Bulgaria. 38 N,, _____E London, England_____N, 0 Tokyo, Japan36 N, _______E Cairo, Egypt______ N, _____E Moscow, Russia56 N, _____ E

23
Using the locations of the featured cities, what conclusions can you draw about each city in regards to the other four themes? ( movement, region, place, HEI) LocationMovementRegionPlaceHEI Tokyo London Rio de Janeiro
24
1. How does Rio compare to Tokyo in regards to the themes of location, movement and place? (pages 68 & 101) 2. How does Moscow, Russia compare to London, England in regards to the themes of location, movement and place? 3. How does Cairo compare to Athens in regards to the theme of region? Higher Question!
25
Homework: How have innovations changed the way we find absolute and relative locations? Provide an example.
26
Topic: Geographic Features Session: 9 Date: 9/22 Warm-UP: Explain how life in a desert would be different from life along a river. Give specific differences. You may sketch two scenes to illustrate your explanation. Which would be a better location for establishing a settlement? A desert or by a river? Justify your reasoning.
27
In our study of geography, SWBAT describe geographic features and determine the impact the geography has on settlements by examining maps and atlases to gather details for drawing conclusions in a chart and by creating a foldable. NCSCOS 6G
29
Vocab: The term topography comes from the Greek words topos which means "place" and graphō which means "write". After viewing the video, explain the relevance of topography's Greek root words. Topography is a broad term used to describe the detailed study of the earth's surface. This includes changes in the surface such as mountains and valleys as well as features such as rivers and plains.
30
Vocab: Based on the definition, the map and the video, explain why those two Greeks roots were joined to create the term topography. Th e term topography comes from the Greek words topos which means "place" and graphō which means "write". Th e Greek words topos and grapho were used to make the word topography because it means to examine _____________________ and ________________________ about it.

GEOGRAPHIC FEATURES T heme of Place Essential Questions: What are geographic features? How are civilizations impacted by geographic features?
33
Geographic Feature: Cape A pointed piece of land that stretches out into the water. Definition: Picture/illustration Impact: Settlements on a cape experience high winds and rocky soil. Lighthouses are built on capes to prevent ships from crashing into them. Example: Cape Horn, South America
34
Geographic Features (pg. A8-A9) Gulf (part of the ocean partly surrounded by land) D esert Plateau Peninsula Valley Archipelago Volcano Mountain Isthmus River (a long, flowing body of water) 1. Definition, 2. Picture, 3. Example (not in the US) and IMPACT (place, movement, HEI) on a settlement or civilization!
35
Rank your geographic features from 1-10. Your #1 feature would be the most conducive/best place for locating a settlement and your #10 would be the least conducive/worse place for locating a settlement. Justify your reasoning for your #1 and #10 choices. Be very specific in your reasoning.
36
Homework: Continue working on study guide, finish foldable if necessary.
37
Topic: Thematic Maps Session: 9 Date: 9/20 Warm-UP: Examine the MAP 3 RESOURCES MAP of Europe. Find the most populated countries. They will have a "people" icon in the country (1 is most populated, 8 is least populated). ***Considering the location, size, and physical characteristics of each country, explain why the people of Europe live where they do. Let's take it higher! What patterns do you see?
38
Objective: In our study of geography, SWBAT utilize thematic maps to gather, examine and compare economic and physical characteristics of European countries by working cooperatively to analyze maps, develop strategies and compete in a simulation game. NCSCOS 6G Literacy skills: Reading for information
39
Vocab & Review: D ifferentiate between a physical, political and thematic map. (You may reference back to pages A4-A6 in the textbook. )
40
Steps in reading a thematic map: 1. Find the theme in the title. 2. Examine the legend/key.
41
European Inspirer You will strategize with your teammates to devise a trip through Europe earning points based on economic, geographic and social characteristics.
