2. Directions Complete the reading on the Fall of the Ottoman Empire, in your table groups and highlight important information. What happened at the end of World War I?

3. Directions for making a map Looking at the maps on the front 2.1B try to determine borders for 6 nations in the region based on the information presented. Sketch on your blank map, 2.1C, borders and name all 6 nations. On the back of map 2.1C explain why you placed the borders where you did. On the back of map 2.1C you should also list using bullet points 2 strengths and 2 weakness of your map.

4. Final Piece In your groups you will come to a consensus on where the borders should be and create a large map of the region with a description/explanation of your choices for border justification. You will tape your group maps on the wall and we will examine them taking notes on all the maps as a class and discuss.

5. Class Discussion How did you feel working in your table groups to determine borders? Why? What were some of the challenges for your group? What criteria did you use in determining where to draw the borders on your map? What was the ultimate goal of Britain and France? What was the goal of your group? What do you think was your groups biggest success? What were some strengths and weaknesses you noted in your map and in other groups’ maps?

7. Class Discussion What do you see here? How are the colonial borders similar to or different from the borders you created? What is the best criteria for drawing borders for a new nation? What areas might be sites for future conflict? Why? How might the borders been different if the inhabitants had been consulted?
