An International Scoping Study of a Neutrino Factory & Super-beam Facility

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK A Little History –NuFact03 –2004 –April 2005 Desire for a new World Design Study towards a future Neutrino Factory - to succeed Studies I, II and IIa in the US - failed to get support Plan for a proposal to 2 nd call in EU FP6 design study programme - 2 nd call cancelled John Wood – CEO CCLRC(RAL) – requests a ‘Scoping Study’ for a future neutrino factory – and promises support

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK May 2005 –Meeting in London to start the process (~40 people came at short notice) –Committee – S Geer, Y Kuno, V Palladino, K Peach charged with setting up the organisation PhysicsAcceleratorDetector Programme Committee Chair Stakeholders Chair – PJD Physics – Yori Nagashima Accelerator – Mike Zisman Detector – Alain Blondel ‘Stakeholders’ still to be defined

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Aims → Final Report A one year study –More details in the document - but primarily To review the physics case for an accelerator neutrino complex post- T2K and Nova To compare options - and complementarities - including costs –Super-beam + detector –Neutrino Factory + detector Final Report - presentation to NuFact06 and a written document Sep 2006 Result to lay foundations for a full CDR for such a facility by 2009/10 - and to form the basis of a proposal (early 2007) to the EU P7 programme for funding for such a CDR

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Why 2009/10 for CDR –LHC will have produced first results –LHC wlll have been paid for –PEP2 & Tevatron programmes will have ended – so funds should become available for new projects But there will be many calls –Linear Collider, S-LHC…. The Neutrino Community must have a coherent well-argued plan at that time to obtain support for a major project for second half of next decade –time is short

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Support The plan was presented to ECFA on June 23 (RECFA) & June 24 (PECFA) and received strong support CCLRC & RAL US-NFMC, BENE, JNFC, UKNF --- Now we need the workers

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Structure –Aim to maintain a broad geographical distribution of responsibilities – a truly international study Working Groups –Each has a Convenor who has formed a Council of experts to direct the effort ISS Open Collaboration Meetings –There will be major ISS meetings every 3 months CERNSep 22 – 24, 2005 –Provisionally JapanJan 23 – 25, 2006 RALApril 24 – 29, 2006 – to coincide with April BENE meeting UC, IrvineAugust 21, 22 (just before NuFact06)

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Accelerator WG Convenor – Mike Zisman (LBL) Council –Richard Fernow (BNL) –Yoshi Mori (Kyoto) –Chris Prior (RAL/Oxford) –Roland Garoby (CERN) –Bob Palmer (BNL) Topics –Proton Driver –Target –Phase rotation/Bunching –Cooling –Acceleration –Storage ring

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Detector WG Convenor - Alain Blondel (Geneva) Council –Paolo Strolin (Napoli) –Alan Bross (FNAL) –Kenji Kaneyuki (Tokyo) –Dave Wark (ICL) Topics –Water Cerenkov –Magnetized Iron –Liquid Argon –Low Z Scintillator –Hybrid Emulsion –Near Detector

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Physics WG ConvenorYori Nagashima ( Osaka) Council –Manfred Lindner (MTU) –Pilar Hernandez (Valencia) –Debbie Harris (FNAL) –Ken Long (ICL) –Lee Roberts (Boston) –Osamu Yasuda (Tokyo Metropolitan) –Hitoshi Murayama (LBL) Topics –Theory –Phenomenology –Experiment

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK CERN Meeting Sep 22 – 24 Aims –Map out the programme for the coming year for each of the groups. –More specific (& realistic) goals –Understand how to combine accelerator & detector activities (& costing) - for the physics goals –Engage with the community and encourage them to join and contribute –Great opportunities Many developments since previous US Study 2

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK CERN Meeting Sep 22 – 24 Prelim Agenda –Thursday Sep 22(In)formal meetings of the working groups –Friday Sep 23amWelcome, Plenary convenor presentations pmJoint & Parallel WG sessions Dinner –Saturday Sep 24amPlenary session with summaries from the WGs pmJura hike Detailed plans in preparation - and will be included on the web site Please register soon - important to have a strong turn-out

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK Web Site http://hepunx.rl.ac.uk/uknf/wp4/scoping/ Details of working groups Documents Mailing List - please subscribe saying which group(s) you wish to join – or just subscribe to the general list Registration for the CERN Meeting - those registering will be automatically included on the mailing lists

7 Sep 2005P J Dornan - MICE-UK To Conclude Following this initiative from John Wood the world neutrino community has a golden opportunity to present its plans for future neutrino activities - but it requires a very concentrated effort in a very short time So please contribute to the working groups to make it a success –Everyone welcome - Contact Physics group - Yori Nagashima - nagay@snow.dti2.ne.jp Accelerator Group - Mike Zisman - mszisman@lbl.gov Detector Group - Alain Blondel - Alain.Blondel@cern.ch –or me Peter Dornan – P.Dornan@imperial.ac.uk
