CONFIDENTIAL 1 Good Afternoon! Today we will be learning about Customary units of capacity Let’s warm up : 1)Use your hands to find the length of the book shelf. 2)Use your palm to find the length of the racket. Find the length of the following arrows in inches: 3) 4)
2
CONFIDENTIAL2 Let’s review what we did in the previous chapter Non-standard units of measure give approximate dimensions of an object. Customary units of measurement are the non-standard units. The system of measurement used in the United States is called the Customary system of measurement. Like, we can say that: The desk is as long as 6 of my hands.
3
CONFIDENTIAL3 Review The Egyptians have evidence that proves that they may be the earliest civilization that discovered a standard unit for length. The Greeks used the width of 16 fingers to find one foot. The Romans adopted the foot from the Greeks and divided it into 12 sections which was called UNICAE, which came to be known as an inch. The yard was adopted by King Henry I in the 12th century. Many years ago, the US accepted this standard of measurement from London into our customary system.

CONFIDENTIAL4 Review LENGTH: is a measure how long something is from end to end. For example: The length of my arm is 18 inches. Everyday objects are used as units of measure. HEIGHT: The measurement of distance from bottom to top. For example: Her height is 68 inches. For example: The width of the stripe is 2 inches. WIDTH: The measurement of distance from side to side.

CONFIDENTIAL5 Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch. An inch (in.) is used to measure short lengths in the customary system. You can use a ruler, yardstick or tape to measure in inches. Review CRAYON STEP 1: Place the ruler against one edge of the object. Line up the zero on the ruler with one end of the object.
6
CONFIDENTIAL6 Measure the object to the closest inch. Use half-inch marks to help you decide which inch mark is closest to the end of the object. STEP 2: Measure the object to the closest half-inch. Use quarter- inch marks to help you decide which half-inch mark is closest to the end of the object. STEP 3: CRAYON Review
7
CONFIDENTIAL7 Measure the object to the closest inch. Use the eight-inch marks to help you decide which quarter-inch mark is closest to the end of the object. STEP 4: CRAYON Review
8
CONFIDENTIAL8 Review When measuring length in the customary system the common units used are inches, feet, yards, and miles. From smallest to greatest length measurements are compared as: InchesFeetYardsMiles People use "feet" to measure their height. Customary System LENGTH 1 foot (ft)=12 inches (in.) 1 yard (yd)=3 feet 1 yard=36 inches 1 mile=1,760 yards 1 mile=5,280 feet

CONFIDENTIAL9 Today we will learn about the Customary units of measure for Capacity. CAPACITY: It is a measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. Like, we can say that: A cup of juice is equal to 8 ounces of fluid. An ounces (fl. oz.) is used to measure capacity in the customary system.
10
CONFIDENTIAL10 The container has a capacity of 1 gallon. A coke drink is about 12 fluid ounces. A regular cup of coffee is about one cup. A can of oil for the car is about one quart. A large milk container is about a gallon.
11
CONFIDENTIAL11 Customary Units of Capacity 8 fluid ounces (fl. oz) = 1 cup (c) 2 cups (c) = 1 pint (pt) 2 pints (pt) = 1 quart (qt) 4 quarts (qt) = 1 gallon (gal) Customary Units use to measure the capacity are:

CONFIDENTIAL12 When converting any unit of measurements if you want: To change to a larger unit, divide. To change to a smaller unit, multiply.
13
CONFIDENTIAL13 From smallest to greatest capacity measurements are compared as: When measuring capacity in the customary system the common units used are Ounces, cup, pint, quart, and gallon. Ounces, cup, pint, quart, and gallon.
