Introduction Motivating others in the workplace is being able to identify the reasons which make employees behave a particular way. In most cases this is to drive employees into higher performance standards to increase productivity. Objective To identify, understand, and customize the rewards provided to my colleagues and employees based on their individualized motivations to increase employee satisfaction, engagement, and productivity. Rewards of Work 1 In this article there are insights on how to engage employees and increase their productivity. It defines engagement as having employees embodying two principles: knowing what to do and wanting to do it. From these two principles a matrix is formed highlighting four types of employees: The way to identify an employee’s engagement is by asking them various questions around how they feel about affiliation to the company, the work content they engage in, the role of pay, career opportunities, and benefits offered. Equity Theory 1 A challenge to my ability to customize rewards and improve productivity is the notion of equity theory. The equation below describes the equity theory in principle: As J.S. Adams describes, if equity does not exist across peers based on the individual’s assessment of equity, then they will begin to mirror the productivity to balance the equity equation. Exercise Motivation Note to Markham: This slide is written from an administrator’s perspective as I will use it with my employees immediately. In an attempt to better understand the employee population and improve our business we would ask you to complete the following survey regarding your affiliation to the company, the importance of pay and benefits, how you feel about the work content of your job, and your career opportunities. In the pages that follow, please answer the following questions on a scale of 1 to 5 where 1 is the least satisfied and 5 is the most satisfied. You will also be asked certain demographic questions, however, note that results aggregated and anonymity will be upheld. From these results a general profile will be created and shared with the team on what the most engaging elements of the employee value proposition are for our area, which questions are the most favorable and which are the most unfavorable. Your manager will reach out to you to further go over the results.
