Born François-Marie Arouet Born November 21, 1694 Born in Paris, France Born into a noble family The last of five children Excelled in his education Became a passionate writer A philosopher in politics

Voltaire saw injustice in the authority Discontent with authority, he openly criticized it in his pamphlets He opposed the church rule of a State A critique of the Bible, Mohammed and religious dogma Eventually became a major influence of the French revolution An advocate of social reform, and social and religious tolerance

His literature gained him favor with many French Became a voice of change for the French people through his writing His views of the monarchy were shared with the French people His philosophies were used to recreate the government after the revolution He was a close friend of Benjamin Franklin and supported America’s revolution from England

In 1716 he was exiled from Paris In 1717 he was imprisoned in the Bastille There he wrote the play “OEdipe” and became Voltaire From 1726-1729 he was exiled to England He praised England for its more moderate approach in politics Over the years he traveled a lot and worked with various governments Welcomed back to Paris as a hero only to die shortly after
