SOFT TISSUE INJURIES These include layers of skin, fat and muscle.

wounds These are physical injuries that damage the layers of skin and are typically classified as: OPEN CLOSED

Closed wound Damage occurs beneath the surface of the skin and may be bleeding internally. If you suspect internal bleeding call 911 immediately

Care for a closed wound Apply direct pressure Elevate the inured body part if poss. Apply ice or a cold pack Remember place a towel between ice and skin. Leave pack on for no more than 20 minutes

Four types of open wounds Abrasions Lacerations Avulsions or amputations punctures

To care for an open wound: Use a barrier between hand and wound Apply direct pressure for a few minutes to control any bleeding Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water or run under tap for 5 mins. Apply triple antibiotic ointment or cream to the minor wound (if person has no allergies or sensitivities to med)

Care for open wound cont Cover the wound with a sterile dressing and a bandage

If person also complains of severe pain or cannot move a body part without pain or if you suspect a serious injury then call 911.
