HOT AND COLD ENGINEERING BY KATY AND TAYLOR

DATA TABLE We noticed that as we tried to heat the can it was slowly getting colder. We noticed that it was the easiest to cool the can down than to heat it.

TEAMWORK Katy put the socks over the soda can preventing heat energy leaving the can. She is also testing each of the cans and taking notes. This energy is called convection because the sock is keeping the can more warm. Taylor put the foil around the soda can to make it cold. Aluminum foil also acts as a barrier to light, oxygen, flavor, odor, bacteria and moisture. So with the foil around the soda can it may help with the degree. This energy is called convention.

HEAT TRANSFER Taylor used her sweatshirt and breath to warm up the can. This energy is called convention because she is transferring heat from her body to the soda can.

REAL LIFE EXAMPLES Boiling water - The heat passes from the burner into the pot, heating the water at the bottom. Then, this hot water rises and cooler water moves down to replace it, causing a circular motion. Hot air corn popper - The hot air moves against the corn kernels causing them to get hot enough to pop. Ice melting - Heat moves to the ice from your hand or the air. This causes the melting from a solid to liquid. Hot air balloon - A heater inside the balloon heats the air and so the air moves upward. This causes the balloon to rise because the hot air gets trapped inside. When the pilot want to descend, he releases some of the hot air and cool air takes it place, causing the balloon to lower.

HOW WOULD YOU MODIFY YOUR DEVICE TO MAKE IT MORE EFFECTIVE? Put more socks over the can. We could’ve put the cold can in the freezer over night. We could’ve brought ice in a pack and placed the cold water in there. We could’ve shined the light on the hot can cause the heat of the light to transfer to the can.

THINGS WE HAVE NOTICED The hot can only dropped three degrees down The cold can only dropped six degrees down When we used the blow dryer for the hot can we noticed the water became colder because the hot energy was blown out and evaporated in the air leading the hot water to cool down.
