Ruling an Empire Augustus began an even greater expansion of the Roman Empire. Added territories were divided into provinces, which were governed by a Roman, but which were allowed to maintain their ways of life. Beginning in A.D. 96, Rome was ruled by the five “good emperors.” Perhaps the greatest of them was Hadrian, who issued a uniform code of laws. 1 of 3 The Rise of Ancient Rome Section 2: The Roman Empire The Greek Influence on Rome The Romans admired Greek culture. They had counterparts for many of the Greek gods and goddesses and adopted some Greek heroes. Romans used Greek discoveries in math and science.

Architecture and Technology The Romans built upon the architectural advances of the Greeks, and added the use of arches to create open spaces in buildings. They used concrete to make taller buildings, such as the Colosseum.
