Rates A ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units is called a rate. For example: The units words and minutes are different.

Unit Rates When a rate is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit, it is called a unit rate. For example: The denominator is 1 unit. The rate on the left can be read as 50 words per minute.
