THE KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY OF MATTER
2
1. ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF ATOMS Solids are joined together tightly and maintain a constant shape and volume Liquids are joined together loosely and maintain their shape but not their volume Gases are not joined and do not maintain their shape or volume
3
2. MOLECULES ARE IN CONSTANT MOTION 1. Gas molecules are in constant random motion 2. Liquid molecules can rotate and vibrate 3. Solid molecules can only vibrate
5
3. COLLISION BETWEEN MOLECULES TRANSFERS ENERGY Similar to a newton’s cradle, a collision between the first two balls transfers energy to the next ones causing them to move as well
6
4. THERMAL ENERGY (HEAT) INCREASES MOLECULAR MOTION The amount of energy that a particle has is directly related to the temperature
7
5. MOLECULES IN GASES DO NOT EXERT LARGE FORCES ON ONE ANOTHER UNLESS THEY COLLIDE
8
PHASE CHANGES BETWEEN MATTER All matter can move from one state to another
9
PHASE CHANGE TERMS Start from:Change to:Name solidliquidmelting liquidsolidfreezing liquidgasboiling gasliquidcondensation solid gas (skipping liquid phase) sublimation

ASSIGNMENT You will now apply what you have learned (and will learn) to create a product that describes the Kinetic Molecular Theory of Motion
