YR 11 GRAPHICS DESIGN FACTORS
2
USER-CENTRED DESIGN (U.C.D) When solving design problems, the purpose of USER-CENTRED DESIGN is to identify the human needs or capitalise on an opportunity with a view to developing a solution that functions and satisfies the user.
3
U. C.D - Guiding Questions Understanding the characteristics of the audience is essential to designing products that are effective and meaningful. Questions that allow you to achieve this may include; What is the design problem asking me to do? ❖ WHAT, WHO, WHEN, WHERE, HOW? What is the need to be solved or the reason for the new product? ❖ Social. ❖ Physical – comfort, ergonomics, anthropometric data. ❖ Mechanical, Functional. ❖ Aesthetic. ❖ Economic.
4
U.C.D - Guiding Questions Who is the audience for the solution and the graphical products? (this may be client or end-user) ❖ Age, gender and economic status. ❖ Cultural and Religious considerations. Will the needs of other stakeholders require consideration? ❖ Emotional and sensory appeal. ❖ Fashion trends. What is the design area in which this solution will be produced? ❖ Industrial Design. ❖ Built Environment Design. ❖ Graphics design. ❖ Corporate/Business. ❖ Personal.
5
Elements of Design Elements of Design refer to the components available for the designer to communicate visually, while Principles of Design describe how the elements could be used. Elements of Design most commonly used are: ❖ Line ❖ Colour ❖ Shape ❖ Form ❖ Texture ❖ Tone ❖ Space
6
Principles of Design Principles of Design most commonly used are: ❖ Balance – Symmetry, Asymmetry, Radial, Pattern ❖ Contrast ❖ Proximity ❖ Harmony ❖ Alignment ❖ Repetition/Consistency ❖ Hierarchy/Proportion/Scale
7
TECHNOLOGIES Tools processes and skills are selected according to the graphical representations required. What are the tools, processes and skills required to produce high quality, effective graphical products to solve your design problem ? software systems, CADD programs drawing tools printers (2-D, 3-D) procedures and conventions (in relation to maps)
8
DESIGN STRATEGIES To facilitate innovation when developing new or improved solutions to design problems, consideration of design strategies should be used to develop, refine and document solutions. What design strategies might be used to help solve this design problem ? Brainstorming Design heuristics (eg. SCAMPER, CAFEQUES, Mind-mapping) Graphic Organisers
9
SUSTAINABILITY To develop sustainable solutions consideration must be given to the impacts of social, economic and environmental sustainability in all stages of the design process. How does sustainability influence your graphical solutions ? Social Sustainability changing social trends the changing nature of work technological change. Economic Sustainability responsible use of resources ensuring products are “built to last” and function efficiently over a long time. Environmental Sustainability life cycle analysis eco-foot print recycling use of renewable energy and resources and systems to ensure sustainability
10
LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES Legal responsibilities ensure that solutions to design problems are accountable and safe. What are the legal responsibilities to be considered for this design problem?
