8A What you need to Know……
2
The Brain. Hypothalamus (4f’s) ▫Regulates hunger (2 sub Parts) ▫The lateral Hypothalamus-brings on hunger Orexin- The hunger producing hormone (brought on by the LH
3
Hypothalamus Continued Lower mid-hypothalamus ▫Ventromedial hypothalamus ▫Depresses Hunger ▫Obestatin- Secreted by the stomach “I am full” ▫PYY- lower intestine (digestive tract) I am not hungry (peptide)
4
Appetite Ghrelin- Empty stomach- I am Hungry Leptin- Secreted by fat cells, increses metabolism and decrease hunger ▫It takes less food to maintain an obese weight ▫ More food for a non obese person to gain weight. ▫ Because of leptin.
5
Set Point Theory How the Hypothalamus might decide what to tell the body It will tell us when the “set point” is reached and raises the metabolic rate to burn any excess food. Or to keep us alive if starving Not believed to be set, therefore it is argued it is a settling point.
6
Eating Disorders Bulimia-large amounts of food in short periods of time (binge) then purge. ▫Excessive exercise ▫laxatives Anorexia-starve to below 85% of normal body weight ▫Mostly seen in women
