LICs want to gain revenue – tourism as a global industry doubles every 15 years and it is the biggest growth industry, employer and source of revenue in the world. HICs usually have high numbers of departures as residents can afford to travel – so there is a constantly renewable supply of tourists who could potentially go to LICs, who have substantially more wealth and therefore profitability for LICs can be high. Tourism seen as the ‘smoke-less’ industry – brings substantial income, like manufacturing, minus the environmental pollution

For LICs, tourism is often a quicker way to raise national income, compared to exporting primary products or developing a manufacturing sector. LICs see tourism as a more reliable earner of minerals, cash crops and manufactured goods (that have experienced price fluctuations) Seen by LICs as an opportunity to define and raise money to preserve national culture, wildlife and unique natural features.
