Interdependence & Environmental Changes Week 11 Directions 1.Prepare your desk for science. Put your signed summative assessment face down on your desk. 2.Use voice level 0 (no voice) to look at your notebook pg. 32 & 33 to review the human interactions that can be helpful or harmful.

Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will identify consequences of natural environmental changes. Warm Up: What are natural environmental changes? How are they different form human changes? Share some examples.

Table of Contents DateTitlePage Natural Changes in the Environment 34 Once you are finished with the Table of Contents, go to page 34 and add the title and date to the top of the page.

Succession The process of gradual change from one community of organisms to another Occurs as the environment changes Occurs in stages

Succession Examples What begins as a lake gradually fills with sediments, which shrink the area of the pond. A bog forms, then a marshy area, and finally a meadow completes the successional stages.

Succession Examples

Changes in Climate Climate: the average temperature, winds, and rainfall for an area over many years Climates change very slowly over a long period of time

Question: What can happen to different species when there is succession or climate change ?

Extinct vs. Endangered Extinct: no longer living Endangered: a species whose population is so small that it is in danger of becoming extinct

Fossils Show changes in species and tell us about the environment from long ago.

Natural Changes Consequences Slow changes Succession Changes in climate Different plants and animals arrive New communities form Some species might become extinct

Not all changes happen slowly over time… http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsy stem/naturaldisasters/ Hurricanes Floods Wildfires Volcanic eruptions Earthquakes

Natural Changes Consequences Rapid changes Hurricanes Floods Wildfires Volcanic eruptions Earthquakes Destroy plants Force species to leave the area (no resources available) Some species might become extinct Can help keep ecosystems balanced

Reflection What are two processes that change an environment over a very long period of time? What are two events that change an environment very quickly or rapidly?

Targets (Revisited) Targets: Students will identify consequences of natural environmental changes.

Homework SubjectHomeworkDue Date ScienceSummative TestTuesday ** You will get a review sheet at the beginning of the next science lesson (Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday)
