Biology – the study of life Branches of biology include: Zoology – study of animals Botany – study of plants Microbiology – study of microorganisms Cell Biology – study of cells Ecology – study of ecosystems
3
Living things are composed of cells Cells – basic unit of life Living things reproduce Cells can produce through asexual or sexual reproduction Sexual reproduction – cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new organism Asexual reproduction – process by which an organism reproduces by itself
4
Living things contain DNA and use the same genetic code Living things grow and develop Cells divide through a process called mitosis which makes more cells Living things must obtain energy and molecules Metabolism – chemical reactions in which organisms build up or break down materials as it carries out life processes.
5
Living things respond to their environment Stimulus – a signal to which an organism responds Living things maintain a stable environment Homeostasis – maintaining a stable environment Living things change over time Age Evolve
6
Basic Units: Mass – gram Volume – liter Length – meter Temperature – centigrade
7
Dimensional analysis/conversion facts Using metric system Microscopy Parts of microscope Using a compound light microscope Calculating magnification
