1
What makes something a living thing? Canis lupis familiaris. Biology: The study of life
2
Why is one living and the other is not?
3
Cells/Organization Cell-Smallest unit capable of all life functions Unicellular- one cell ex. Bacteria Multicellular- organism made of many cells
8
DNA/Heredity Deoxyribonucleic acid - carries the code for all organisms
9
Reproduction Sexual reproduction - involves 2 parents Is it essential for an individual to reproduce? Asexual reproduction - involves a single parent
10
Grow and Develop Organisms develop as they mature into adult organisms Organisms grow as they produce MORE CELLS
11
Obtain and use Energy/Metabolism Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy? What reactions are going on in our body? Metabolism = the total of all chemical reactions in an organism
12
Energy Use/Metabolism Autotrophs( plants) – use energy from the sun to make their own food “glucose” Heterotrophs- ingest food for energy Where does all energy come from?
13
Energy/Metabolism Contd. Catabolism- The process of breaking down complex substances into simpler substances Release energy –Digestion
14
Energy/Metabolism cont. Anabolism- the process of building complex substances from simpler substances – Requires energy – Building up cells How do humans do this?
15
Respond to Stimulus Light Temperature Odor Sound Pressure Gravity Heat Water Stimulus- anything that causes an organism to react
16
Evolution/Adaptation Evolution- Groups of Organisms will change over time in order to survive with changing environments Adaptation- characteristics that improves organisms ability to survive and reproduce
17
Homeostasis Homeostasis - the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment despite conditions in the external environment. Human body temperature is……… F if body temperature rises, you sweat. F if body temperature lowers, you shiver.
18
Giant tortoise- life span = 150 years Limited Life Span
19
"It's older than the great pyramids, older than Stonehenge” 4,770-year-old "Methuselah" bristle-cone pine. "When Christ walked the earth it was already 2,700 years old." California, USA
20
Mayfly – life span = one day!
21
A Lesson in the Art of Enjoying Life! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFnAdeaoG74
22
Alive or Not?
23
Is a virus living?
25
1. Made up of one or more cells 2. Have DNA 3. Can reproduce 4. Grow and develop 5. Obtain and use energy 6. Respond to their environment 7. Can change over time(evolve) 8. Maintain Stable Internal environment 9. Limited life span All Living things share these characteristics.
