Section 8-1 Qualities of Strong Families

Families must work to refine the skills and qualities they need to succeed.

Communicating Effectively Good Communication Vital to any relationship A sign that family members are in touch with each other’s feelings Limits interference Gives affirmation – positive input that helps others feel appreciated and supported

Respecting Each Other Family members recognize each person is different. Take pride in individual traits and abilities. Don’t take advantage of anyone’s short- comings. Family members in all stages of life are respected.

Sensitivity is required to respect each other’s opinions. Respect that everyone has a right to draw their own conclusions and to have others listen to those opinions. Strong families respect that each person needs their own personal space.

Showing Unity Demonstrate commitment – a pledge to support something of value. 1. Be willing to work together and sacrifice for the benefit of the family unit. 2. Take genuine interest in the happiness and welfare of each family member.

Trust each other – members know they can count on each other. 1. Children learn trust as infants, when parents supply what they need. 2. Trust builds when parents are caring and true to their word.

3. In strong families, children are given responsibilities suited to their age and ability. 4. Strong families believe in second chances – and in doing better when they are given.

Share values and beliefs – a core of beliefs provides stability and a shared outlook on life. 1. Many families find strength in religious beliefs – belief in a higher power gives hope, especially in times of trouble. 2. Families may share a commitment to some other ideal beyond themselves – ex: environment, that brings the family together.

3. Many family beliefs consist of a clearly communicated moral code, principles of right and wrong. 4. Parents who agree on basic issues are more likely to teach morals through discussion and supporting each other.

Act responsibly – strong families practice and teach responsibility. 1. Each member learns to do the jobs expected of them without reminders or pressure. 2. Responsibility is shown by caring for each other and giving support.

Overcome problems as a team – strong families develop ways to approach and solve problems. 1. Good communication skills are needed to identify a problem early. 2. Members are committed to the family’s survival to work and sacrifice for solutions. 3. Strong families pull together as a team when trouble strikes by trusting in each other and their beliefs.

Spend time together Time sent together is a sign of family strength and a way to build it. Strong families explore common interests and activities. Members need to make a commitment to being with their family.

Spending time together establishes traditions – customs that are followed over time and passed from one generation to another – common family memories.

What’s important? Any family can improve if they want. Strong families are found wherever people appreciate those closest to them and show it.
