Growth in tourism 6. Internet: Allows people to research destinations and find cheap holidays. 7. The Euro: A single currency means we don’t have to worry about exchanging currency when travelling to other countries in the Eurozone. – But currency must be exchanged outside of the Eurozone and this costs money!

How important is tourism to our economy? In pairs, discuss how much you think tourist spending in Ireland amounted to in 2014.

Tourism in Ireland Tourism is hugely important to the Irish economy. Many people are employed in the tourist industry. Millions of tourists visit Ireland annually and spend € billions.

Tourism in Ireland Approximately €3,500,000,000 spent by tourists in Ireland in 2014. According to the government’s Dept. of Transport, Tourism & Sport, more than 6½ million visitors spent a similar amount here in 2011!

Tourism in Ireland A number of things have been done to promote tourism in Ireland: 1.The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport – Minister Paschal Donohoe, TD. 2.Fáilte Ireland and Discover Ireland – dedicated to tourism.

Tourism in Ireland 3. Facilities/Amenities provide essential services for tourists. These include: Hotels Restaurants Visitor centres Transport facilities – buses Sports facilities – golf courses 4. Tourist Information Offices

Tourism in Ireland There are four major kinds of tourist region: 1.Areas of natural beauty. 2.Beaches and coastlines. 3.Regions offering recreational and sporting facilities. 4.Cities. (We will be focusing on each of these during tomorrow’s class.)
