3. Purpose of the Creating Music Lesson This lesson will explore the process of creating a song based on prior knowledge of basic rhythmic notation, chord progressions, and stylistic appropriateness as it applies to text.

4. Objectives Appreciation of a variety of musical genres Understanding the relationship between text and music Create melodies and chords Ability to set text to music in an appropriate genre Composing, recording, and evaluating a song

5. Materials Book(s) of poetry or an original poem Computer Band-in-a-Box, MIDI, PowerTracks Pro Audio, and Sibelius Software Recordable CD

6. Procedures 1.Using an approved poem, create a melody notating rhythm as it fits the text and pitch for emphasis accordingly and enter it into Sibelius Student software. 2.Create a harmonic progression by adding three more voices using block chords. 3.Choose an appropriate style that will aid in the expression of your composition using Band-in-a-Box. 4.Add instrumentation as desired in Pro-Tracks Audio and save as an MP3 file. 5.E-mail me your completed composition as an MP3 file.
