© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Overview What: Mid-Year Check-in Dinner + Cultural Event When: Tuesday, October 23rd, 5:00-7:30PM Where: Pheonix Restaurant + Chinatown Neighborhood –2131 South Archer Ave., Chicago, IL 60616 –Who: 10 th, 11 th and 12 th Grade Mentors and Students Objectives: –Explore a different neighborhood of the city –Learn about Chinese culture –Spend quality time with students in a semi-structured atmosphere –A chance to check-in and reassess how to make relationships stronger this academic year –Register: online, through link in MMAHM. –Payment: For this event, dinner is included for two mentors per student. We ask that team members coordinate to discuss who will be the two mentors to register under the “Primary Mentor” registration tab, and who will be responsible for the $25 charge for the “ Additional Mentor” registration

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 What To Expect Delicious Chinese food, Hong Kong style –Vegetarian options will be available –Guest speaker to expand on an aspect of Chinese culture Unstructured Time with Your Mentee –Eating Dinner –Walking around Chinatown Neighborhood Shops, Grocery Stores, Restaurants Discussion Questions placesd on Your Table –To help facilitate conversation if you need them –Questions will focus on engagement and commitment to AIM High and mentors, relationship building, academic insight, etc. A chance to re-engage your mentee and revisit goals and plans from Kick-Off Event

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Registration and Payment Please register by October 19 th so we can have an accurate count and notify the restaurant in advance with how many visitors to expect. For this event, dinner is included for two mentors per student. We ask additional mentors to submit payment for $25 via the events.org registration link in the MMAHM. –Check in with the mentors on you team to make sure which two mentors will register under the “Primary Mentor” and who will register under the “Additional Mentor” tab and be responsible for the $25 charge

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Getting There Students will leave on buses from their schools at 8AM. Mentors are welcome to join students on the bus. However, you must tell us if you plan to do this. If not, we will assume you are meeting us at the college. © Center for Companies That Care, 2012 The Goal Give students a glimpse into campus life Deepen students’ understanding of what it takes to get in to college and what they can do now to ensure success in college Begin to think (more) about “college fit” –Learn about the various characteristics that make one college different from the next –Figure out which characteristics of a university are most important to your student (What their college needs to have…What environments they thrive in…) Have fun and get to know your students better

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Agenda for Day 9:15AM: Arrive at campus 9:30-10:15AM: College Readiness Presentation(lobby of Old Main) 10:15-10:30AM: North Park University Admissions Presentation (lobby of Old Main) 10:30-11:15AM: Student Panel (lobby of Old Main) –Our students will get a chance to meet current students to talk about college life 11:15AM-12:30PM: Campus Tour (dress appropriately for the weather) 12:30-1:30PM: Lunch (use this time to discuss your college experience with your students)

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Your Role To accompany your student and help them take in the experience –Point out things that were similar or different from your college experience Help them figure out if this school is a good fit. –What do they like or don’t they like? –What would they change about this school? Encourage them to ask questions of presenters Ensure they act professional –Emphasize importance of first impressions Help them figure out if they are on track to go to a school like this

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Your Role (cont’d) Share your college knowledge and memories during lunch. Communicate with your student about this summer’s College Bus Tour for current sophomores and internships for current juniors Their participation in the bus tour will depend on their attendance at the weekly meetings and monthly events. (We will prepare students for this event in the after school program)

© Center for Companies That Care, 2012 Incentive Team Prize We will be going to Haunted Trails on October 18 th –Haunted House –Go Karts –Amusement rides –Arcade games –Food and Refreshments The bus will be leaving from our offices at 5:00 p.m. –Please arrive by 4:45 p.m. –We will be leaving the park at 8:00 pm and arriving back to our offices by 8:30 pm Students must be picked up by a parent or guardian from our offices or (if permission slips allow) Mentors can take students home. –If you would like to drive to the event the address is 7759 S. Harlem Ave. Burbank, IL.
