“When You Were My Age…” Mrs. Graves 2 nd Grade/Room 12

Where did you live and what kind of home did you have? I grew up in Oakland and lived in a 2 bedroom house. I had a swing set and a sandbox in the backyard. I didn’t have any sisters or brothers.

What was your favorite book? Actually, I had more than 1 favorite book. It was a whole series – The Nancy Drew Mystery series. I loved how Nancy used to solve mysteries.

How did you get to the grocery store and home again? Mostly, I walked. We only had 1 car, and my dad drove it to work. My mom and I often would walk to the store and purchase the groceries. Then my dad would pick them up on his way home.

What did you do for fun? I had 3 really close friends in my neighborhood: Susan, Mike, and Paul. We would play hopscotch, school, hula hoop, jump rope, board games, and ride bikes around the block. We spent a lot of time outside. We loved to watch The Wizard of Oz, so every time it came on TV (usually on a Sunday), we would all run in the house and enjoy the movie.

What kind of music did you listen to? I listened to what is called now “The Oldies.” When I became a teenager, the Beatles were popular, so they were my favorite group. I actually went to one of their concerts in San Francisco.

What did you wear to school? I went to Catholic School and wore a uniform which consisted of a white blouse and a navy blue jumper. In 7 th and 8 th grades, we wore a white blouse and a navy blue skirt.

If you had a television, what was your favorite television show? We got a TV when I was about 5 years old. At that time, there were only a couple of stations and all programs were in black and white. I loved to watch Ding Dong School, Howdy Doody Time, and the Mickey Mouse Club.

What kind of phone did you have? All phones were black when I was young, and most people had 1 or none. They consisted of a black receiver which you listened to and spoke into, and a base which had a rotary dial on it.
