President James K. Polk, elected in 1844, pushed for annexation of Texas Texas Polk sent politician John Slidell to Mexico in 1845 to solve the border dispute, but Mexico refused to see Slidell 1846, Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to the border Taylor and his men were attacked by Mexican troops Polk used this as an excuse to declare war on Mexico C.M.
